Whenever we’re tasked with doing certain aspects of our jobs that we don’t necessarily enjoy, it’s easier to get distracted by every little thing. For many teachers, writing report card comments isn’t exactly the most exciting or enjoyable part of the job, but it’s necessary to help students recognize their academic strengths and weaknesses. Here are some useful tips to help you stay focused while coming up with comment ideas for report cards.
The first step to removing distractions is identifying exactly what they are. Clutter, social media, electronic devices, uncomfortable room temperature, pets, personal issues, etc. can all be distracting you from completing the task at hand. Before you get started, take a few minutes to cleanup your workspace and make a list of the things you find the most distracting. Then, make the appropriate changes to create an environment that’s conducive to your productivity.
Calming, yet upbeat instrumental music has been proven to help improve concentration when working on challenging or undesirable tasks. If you find your mind often wanders when you’re working on report card comments, then it might help to put on your headphones and listen to some relaxation tunes or even white noise to block out external noise.
Your phone is undeniably one of your biggest distractions. Any time you’re charged with an undesirable or challenging task, the first thing you’re probably tempted to do is mindlessly scroll through social media. Resist the urge by either putting your phone on silent or turning it off altogether, so that you can concentrate on getting your work done without the incessant buzzing or dinging sounds of notifications. Check them later in your free time.
Different people are accustomed to different working environments and conditions. Some people thrive amidst the background noise of coffee shops and school or public libraries surrounded by other people who are working or studying. Others require a quieter and secluded setting. Whatever your workplace preferences are, make sure that you choose an appropriate place to work that’s just right for you.
The key to concentration is to simply focus on one task at a time rather than attempting to multitask. Multitasking is actually an incredibly inefficient method of working. The brain simply isn’t programmed to focus on multiple tasks simultaneously. Multitasking has been proven to cause mental fatigue and an overwhelming feeling of stress, which can lead to mistakes being made that will need to be corrected later. This decreases your quality of work, productivity, performance, and efficiency.
Set a timer to remind yourself to take short breaks to refresh your mind. Alternatively, you could take a break after completing a certain number of report card comments (e.g., get up and stretch or walk around after doing 10-15). Either way, it’s important to stop and take a breather, so that you can come back to your work with a fresh perspective and avoid burning out.
