Teaching can be a challenging career. It requires excellent time management skills and the ability to balance multiple ongoing projects. With responsibilities like writing lesson plans, grading tests and report cards, and teaching in the classroom, teachers can find it difficult to fit everything into a specific timeframe. To help teachers be more efficient with the limited time they have, check out these classroom time management ideas and essential tools for teachers.
Time management for teachers requires organization. Organizing your day around the most important tasks is a great way to ensure you are spending your time wisely. That way, if anything unexpected occurs, the responsibilities that are the highest priority will be taken care of first.
It’s easy to lose track of time while planning lessons, but if you spend three hours on a 30-minute lesson each day, your energy will be zapped before you realize it. You may be tempted to spend hours making an incredible PowerPoint presentation, but if the same lesson or concept can be taught using a game or demonstration, why not choose the simpler option?
It is more efficient to separate your grading work into batches, rather than try to grade the entire work of the class in the same day. Piling on loads of work can make it seem overwhelming, and you may be tempted to procrastinate. Leaving all of this work to the last minute can cause undue stress. Focus on grading a small batch each day to give you a sense of accomplishment.
Is there anything in your daily routine that is wasting your time? Do you spend hours watching YouTube videos or sit on the couch every night browsing social media? Do you ever try to “multitask” by watching television while trying to work, only to realize you feel unsettled and distracted? Eliminate the things that waste your time and make your grading or lesson planning inefficient.
Many teachers spend a lot of their time thinking about their students and how to continuously improve. However, taking time for personal needs is usually lower on their priority list. This can cause teachers to become more exhausted and burned out, and also makes the classroom less effective and efficient. Set aside personal time to avoid burnout.
